At least 12 people have died and another 92 are missing in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after torrential rains caused a river to overflow. The heavy rain has also triggered landslides in the area.
Flooding struck the Bihambwe village in the Masisi territory of North Kivu province on 19 September. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said via Social Media that 12 people have died. Local media say that 18 people swept away in the floods have been found. However, 92 people are still missing, according to MSF.
Bihambwe is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Goma, capital of North Kivu Province. Julien Paluku, Governor of the province, called a crisis meeting on Wednesday and ordered a ministerial delegation and medical tram to visit the affected area.
Heavy rain in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, from 15 August, triggered a deadly landslide in a mountainous area close to the western banks of Lake Albert. Local media reported that at least 200 people died and 50 homes were destroyed.
