Mexico – Floods in Durango Leave 5 Dead

Flooding in the city of Durango, capital of Durango state, caused the deaths of at least 5 people between 29 to 30 September 2016.

The flooding affected several areas of the city, in particular northern and western areas. Streets were turned to rivers of mud and several buildings collapsed. Durango Civil Protection were called on to carry out several flood rescues and search through collapsed buildings.

It is estimated that hundreds of houses suffered flood damage. Eighteen shelters have been opened around the city for those forced out of their homes. It is not known how many people have been displaced.

At least 5 deaths have been reported. Three of the victims are thought to have died when their vehicle hit flood water. Another victim died in said to have died when a house collapsed.

Local media reported that 97 mm of rain was recorded in just a few hours overnight, between 29 and 30 September.

The governor of Durango, Jose Rosas Aispuro, visited the affected areas of the city on 30 September. He later told local media that the city recorded around 20% of its annual rainfall in just 8 hours.

Mexico’s Interior Department has since declared a state of emergency to ensure that local authorities have resources to meet the nutritional needs, shelter and health of the affected population.
