Flooding and landslides have struck in several districts in the province of Aceh, Indonesia over the last few days.
Indonesia’s disaster management agency, BNPB, report that as many as 8 villages were affected in the districts of Semadam and Lawe Sigala-Gala, both in Southeast Aceh Regency, Aceh, on 11 April.
Preliminary assessments suggest that 2 people have died in the floods and at least 1 person is still missing. A total of 298 homes were damaged, 127 of them severely.
The next day areas of West Aceh Regency were hit by floods. BNPB report that 1,784 people were affected in a total of 11 villages in the districts of Woyla Barat and Arongan Lambalek. Full damage assessments are yet to be carried out.
The floods were caused by intense rain in the area that began the previous day. Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics (BMKG) recorded 110 mm of rain in 24 hours from 10 to 11 April at Cut Nyak Dien Airport in Nagan Raya Regency, Aceh, about 200 km west of Seumadam. According to BMKG many surrounding areas recorded 50 mm to 70 mm or more during the same period.
