Flooding that has been affecting parts of Tanzania for the last 10 days. On 27 March 2014, the flood water caused the derailment of a freight train in the country’s central Dodoma region.
The heavy rain has continued to fall over the last few days, with Tanzania’s Arusha region suffering the worst. Over 70 houses have been destroyed by floods in the villages of Themi, Simba and Bwawani, all in Bwawani ward, Arusha Rural District. The disaster has left around 1,000 homeless and currently staying in temporary accommodation including churches and community buildings. Crops and livestock have also been destroyed, with could threaten food shortages in the region during the coming weeks.
Aid agencies, including the Red Cross, have begun to distribute food, blankets, clothing and mosquito nets to the affected areas.
