Tanzania – Floods in 4 Regions Leave at Least 40 Dead, Thousands Displaced

Heavy rain and flooding has continued in Tanzania, affecting the regions of Lindi, Mwanza, Morogoro and Manyara. Media report at least 40 fatalities, 1,750 houses destroyed and 15,000 people displaced.

Flooding has affected parts of the country since late January, when 3 people died and houses were destroyed in Iringa Region.

Around this time flooding also began in parts of Lindi Region. By 03 February the Red cross reported more than 18,000 people affected, 13 deaths, 5 people missing, 1,746 houses destroyed and 1,074 latrines collapsed. By 05 February the death toll had risen to 21 in the region.

Since then flooding has continued or worsened across the country, in particular the regions of Mwanza, Morogoro and Manyara. On 07 February, media reported/a> 9 deaths in Mwanza region, 7 in Morogoro region, and 3 in Mwanza region.
