Over 140 mm (5.5 inches) of rain has fallen in some parts of northern Peru in the last 24 hours.
The heavy rain has caused flooding and mudslides in the Mariscal Cáceres province of the San Martin region in northern Peru, according to Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI). INDECI also say that the rain has caused the Shemacache river in Mariscal Cáceres to overflow.
The worst affected areas is thought to be town of Nuevo Chimbote, in the Pachiza district of the Mariscal Cáceres province. INDECI say that 2 people have died in floods there, which have damaged or destroyed around 50 homes, affecting around 350 people.
Drinking water and power supply has been affected by the flooding. A local school and health centre in Nuevo Chimbote have also been reported as damaged. Local authorities are distributing food and tents to those affected.
WMO reported that 145 mm of rain fell in Pucallpa, neighbouring Ucayali region in a 24 hour period from 03 to 04 December 2014.
