More heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in areas of Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas in Brazil, on 25 March 2023. The city government reported 172 families lost their homes.
Manaus City Hall reported more than 135 incidents of flooding and landslides across the city as a result of the heavy rainfall on 25 March. Around 113 mm of rain fell in the east of the city in a few hours. Videos shared on Social Media showed homes swept away by flood water. Many others were damaged or destroyed by landslides. The Municipal Department of Education made two schools available to house 172 families who lost their homes, Manaus City Hall said.
The most severe damage occurred in the east of the city, in particular in the Armando Mendes and Gilberto Mestrinho neighbourhoods. Other affected areas were in the Japiim neighbourhood where a landslide damaged or destroyed 9 houses.
Federal Government Ministers of Regional Development of Brazil, Waldez Góes, and Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, visited the city on 26 March. They toured some of the affected areas, accompanied by the Mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, Governor of the Amazonas, Wilson Lima, to assess the immediate need for resources for the Amazonas State capital.
This is the second disaster in the city in the last 2 weeks. Eight people died in Manaus after heavy rains on 12 March 2023.
