Ecuador – Flash Floods in Cuenca Cause Major Damage

Raging flash floods swept through the city of Cuenca, capital of Azuay Province in Ecuador on 15 May 2021.

Ecuador’s National Risk and Emergency Management Service (SNGRE), said several rivers and streams overflowed after a period of heavy rain. Flooding along areas of the Tarqui River was particularly extreme.

Firefighters and emergency workers rescued dozens of victims from the flood waters. SNGRE reported at least 34 people have been forced from their homes. Furthermore, flooding damaged or destroyed almost 70 homes in the city. Families have lost material possession after flood water over 1 metre deep invaded their homes. Around 500 people from 100 families were directly affected, SNGRE said.
