Ecuador – Deadly Floods and Landslides in Tungurahua Province

Ecuador’s emergency management service (Nacional de Gestión de Riesgos y Emergencias – SNGRE), reports that severe flooding and landslides have affected central areas of the country over the last few days.

At least one person has died, 1 is missing, 1 injured and 145 evacuated due to landslides and floods in Baños de Agua Santa in the province of Tungurahua.

SNGRE said that rivers in the area broke their banks from 20 June, causing damage in the districts of Vizcaya, Río Blanco and Río Verde. The heavy rain also caused a landslide in Río Blanco which destroyed at least 4 houses. Three bridges were destroyed and several roads damaged.

Heavy rain also affected El Triunfo, Municipality of Patate, around 10km to the north of Baños de Agua Santa. Roads and bridges there have been severely damaged, leaving several communities cut-off since 21 June. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency.
