Guatemala – 1 Dead, 1 Missing, 80,000 Affected as Flooding Continues

The disaster management agency in Guatemala, CONRED, reports that the heavy rain and flooding in several areas of the country has now affected 76,845 people.

Over 30 incidents of heavy rain and flooding have been reported around the country, according to CONRED. One person has died and another is missing. Around 350 homes have been damaged, 27 of them severely, along with 13 roads, 1 schools and 2 bridges.

Around 150 people evacuated their homes, of which 69 were transferred to shelters. CONRED reports that it has provided assistance to 1,788 people.

Some of the worst of the recent flooding was seen in El Progreso department. On 19 May one man died in a landslide in the municipality of Sansare. Six other people were affected and one house was damaged.

The municipality of Guatatoya in El Progreso department was severely affected by flooding on 20 May, 2018. Local authorities have declared a municipal orange alert and activated the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Fund in response.

Meanwhile search teams are still looking for a child who fell into the Cristobal river in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla Department on 19 May.

The rainy season in Guatemala is likely to run until November. According to local media, last year’s rainy season ran from April to November and left more than 30 people dead and some 400,000 affected, mainly due to landslides and floods.
