Haiti – Houses Destroyed, 3 Lives Lost After Days of Heavy Rain

At least 3 people lost their lives and hundreds of houses were damaged or destroyed after heavy rain in Haiti from mid-August 2022.

Civil Protection in Haiti reported heavy rain and floods caused damage in Croix-des-Bouquets, Ouest department, on 16 August 2022. At least 3 people lost their lives and as many as 35 houses were destroyed and 350 damaged. Heavy rain and floods also affected the commune of Cabaret, also in Ouest department and situated about 25 km (15 miles) to the north of Croix-des-Bouquets. Civil Protection reported 3 houses were destroyed and 125 damaged.

On 25 August rain caused flooding in Arcahaie, where about 14 houses were destroyed and 65 damaged. No injuries or fatalities were reported. However flooding in Arcahaie caused severe damage to farms and Civil Protection reported around 50 livestock were missing.

Flooding also occurred on 27 August in the town of Saint-Marc, where 2 bridges were damaged, severely disrupting traffic.

Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic, Haiti’s neighbour on the island of Hispaniola, also experienced some heavy rain and flooding during late August.

Local media and Civil Defence in Dominican Republic reported flooding in La Vega Province, where the Los Dajaos, Manabao and Arroyo Grande rivers overflowed on 23 August 2022. Media reported damage to homes, roads and bridges, mostly in Jarabacoa municipality. Civil Defence reported at least 15 houses damaged in Jarabacoa.
