The Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) in Haiti reports that 2 people have died in floods after torrential rain in Ouest Department during the evening of 02 July, 2019.
The rain caused flash flooding in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. At least 3 people are still missing and 5 others were injured. The floods also caused material damage, destroying 12 houses. Mud and flood debris have blocked roads and disrupted traffic.
DPC said that evacuations were carried out in the commune of Carrefour and emergency teams have been mobilized to assist affected residents and carry out the damage assessments.
Further severe weather could affect the country over the coming days and the DPC called on residents in risk areas to be vigilant.
This is the second spate of deadly flash floods in the department in the space of 4 weeks. In early June at least 4 people died after heavy rain triggered flash flooding in Ouest Department from 03 to 06 June, 2019. DPC reported over 500 flooded houses in the communes of Cabaret, Arcahaie, Cité Soleil, Carrefour, Port-au-Prince, Tabarre and Gressier.
