The Ciliwung River has overflowed once again, flooding houses and businesses nearby in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta. A thunderstorm and heavy rainfall on Sunday 2 March 2014 increased river levels. Once the Ciliwung had broken its banks, some areas of Kampung Melayuwere said to be under 1.5 metres of water.
Local authorities say that around 180 people have been evacuated from their homes and are now staying in temporary accommodation set up in a local hospital and a medical centre.
The flood waters from flooding during January and February this year had barely receded when this latest flood struck.
