Floods and Landslides in East Java, Indonesia

Incessant heavy rain caused flash floods in the regencies of Malang and Jombang, East Java province in Indonesia over the last few days. Further heavy rainfall is expected in the north and eastern Java region.

Landslides have blocked roads, making journeys between Malang and Kediri virtually impossible. A bridge between Kedungrejo hamlet and the Bendosari village has collapsed, also causing transport difficulties.

Some of the worst affected areas are villages near the Konto river, which has overflowed in some areas, such as Ngantang, Pujon subdistrict, where floods struck during the evening of Friday 31 January 2014. One man is missing after he was swept away by river currents. It is believed he was working on the river banks at the time. Landslides have also been seen in Pujon subdistrict. Overall the floods have affected 1,100 families.

In Jombang, a massive landslide has killed at least 12 people. Two people are still missing and two were rescued.
