Some areas of the city recorded more than 80mm of rain in 24 hours to 23 October, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Roads and underpasses were completely swamped, causing severe disruption to traffic mostly in the south of the city. Videos shared on Social Media showed vehicles swept away by flood water. A team from India’s National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) was deployed to rescue at least 3 people. Some local residents blamed the flooding on the city’s poor drainage systems and infrastructure.

The flooding damaged as many as 700 houses. Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa announced compensation for affected families. He said many have lost food items and material possessions.
