India – 1 Dead, Several Reported Missing After Floods in Maharashtra

At least one person has died and many more reported missing after heavy rain caused flash floods in parts of Maharashtra state in India. Meanwhile in the north of the country 5 people have died and 2 are still missing after a landslide in Uttarakhand.

Heavy rainfall on 31 August caused flooding in parts of Maharashtra. One person died and one was injured after floods and landslides in villages around Chalisgaon in Jalgaon district. Local media reported as many as 15 people were thought to be missing and search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Unmesh Patil, Member of Parliament for Jalgaon visited affected areas. He said people in Chalisgaon were concerned about the damage to property and to their livelihoods. Hundreds of livestock have been lost in rural areas of Chalisgaon due to heavy rains, while thousands of acres of farms have been severely damaged. Rural areas have been cut off from the city after bridges and roads were damaged. Police said roads in the area are closed and drivers should find alternative routes.

Jalgaon district government said the Girna river and tributaries broke their banks. Flooding also affected parts of the city of Jalgaon, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing damage to property and businesses. Flooding was also reported in parts of Ahmednagar district.

Over 190 people died in Maharashtra as a result of floods, landslides and heavy rainfall in late July this year.

5 Killed in Uttarakhand Landslide

Severe weather is also taking its toll in the north of the country. India’s Disaster Management Division (DMD) reported that a short burst of heavy rainfall on 30 August triggered a landslide burying houses near the village of Jumma in Pithoragarh district.

DMD said that as of 31 August, the bodies of 5 people have been recovered and 2 people were still missing with search and rescue operations ongoing.
