Further heavy rain from late 17 October has caused yet more flooding in parts of the state of Telangana, India, in particular in the capital, Hyderabad. Last week the city saw record heavy rain which triggered floods causing fatalities and severe material damage.
Since then, further heavy downpours from 17 October caused more damage and claimed more lives. Over 120 mm of rain fell in 24 hours to 18 October in parts of Greater Hyderabad.
At least 6 fatalities were reported as a result of collapsing buildings or electrocution. Media report that Telangana has now witnessed 61 deaths due to rain related incidents since last week.
Roads around Greater Hyderabad were swamped, causing severe traffic disruption. Homes were flooded, with as many as 40,000 families affected, according to local media.
Teams from the National and State Disaster Response forces, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and police carried out evacuations in Greater Hyderabad from 17 October. As many as 2,100 families were evacuated from flooded areas of Chandrayangutta.
More rain is expected over the next 3 to 4 days. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation said: “Most parts of city are likely to witness rainfall, citizens are advised to stay Indoors unless unavoidable.”
