A second wave of flooding in India’s Assam state has affected over 16,000 people since 20 June.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 16,549 people had been affected in over 50 villages in the districts of in Barpeta, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Jorhat and Sivasagar since 20 June. Over 50 people have evacuated their homes and moved to relief camps in Dhemaji. Almost 3,000 hectares of crops have been damaged.
Several rivers in the state are flowing above danger level, including the Brahmaputra in Jorhat, and the Dikhow and Disang in Sivasagar.
The first spate of flooding in the state began in late May. By 27 May, over 270,000 people were affected by flooding in 11 districts, with over 215,000 of them in Goalpara and more than 22,000 in Nalbari.
Heavy rain in early June caused deadly landslides in the state’s Barak valley region.
