Indonesia – 15 Dead, 20 Missing After Landslide in West Java

Disaster management authorities in Indonesia say that at least 15 people have died and 20 are still missing after a massive landslide struck on 30 December in West Java province.

Heavy rain caused tons of mud to slide down steeps slopes in Sukabumi district, burying at least 30 homes in Sirnaresmi village. The village has a population of around 100. National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said the slide has covered a total area of over 10 hectares.

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said nearly 900 rescuers from the National Search and Rescue Agency, the military, police and residents dug through the mud, aided by three mechanical excavators and two tracker dogs. However bad weather, power cuts and damaged roads have slowed their efforts.
