Iran – 8 Dead as Flash Floods and Storms Affect 15 Provinces

Flash flooding, storms and heavy rainfall have affected 15 provinces of Iran over the last week, causing fatalities, displacements and emergency rescues.

The recent spate of severe weather began on 14 July 2021. It has since affected areas in the provinces of East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Alborz, Isfahan, Bushehr, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Kerman, Fars, Sistan and Baluchestan, Semnan, Mazandaran, Hormozgan, Yazd and Kurdistan.

The Red Crescent said 2,578 people were affected, 611 people have been displaced from their homes and 58 people had to be rescued.

According to Red Crescent reports, 7 people died in floods while 1 person was killed as a result of lightning strike. Among the fatalities are two people who went missing after vehicles were swept away by flash floods in Baft county, Kerman Province on 17 July. More people are thought to be missing and search and rescue operations are continuing. Fatalities were also reported in Osku in East Azerbaijan and Darab city in the east of Fars province, among other areas.
