Jakarta Floods Worsen

Two days of heavy rainfall in eastern Java has caused widespread flooding, particularly in the Jakarta metropolitan area. Jakarta was hit by flash flooding last week, as reported by FloodList here.

Some areas were said to be under as much as 2 metres of flood water. The worst affacted areas in East Jakarta are Cawang, Cililitan, Bidara China and Kampung Melayu.

Over 7,000 homes have been inundated, affecting 24,269 people. At least 5,000 people have been forced to leave their homes for temporary accommodation in 35 relief camps.

According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) floods have inundated 31 sub districts in 18 districts of Jakarta.

Further rainfall is expected in the Jakarta area for at least 2 more days.

Kutai Kartanegara Regency

Elsewhere in Indonesia, there have also been reports of flooding in Teriti and Bekotok areas in Loa Ipuh subdistrict, Kutai Kartanegara regency, East Kalimantan province. Heavy rain and the rising of the Mahakam River caused the downstream Tenggarong River to burst to banks, flooding almost 1,000 homes in as much as 1 metre of flood water.
