Malaysia – Floods in Sarawak Leave 1 Dead, 100s Displaced

Heavy rain from 18 December has caused widespread flooding in the state of Sarawak in Malaysia. Flooding has also affected areas of Sabah state where at least 10 houses were destroyed.

Sarawak

The National Disaster Management Agency in Malaysia reported that, as of 20 December, 426 people had been evacuated in Sarawak, where the worst hit areas include Miri and Limbang.

Parts of Sarawak recorded over 170 mm of rain in 24 hours on 18 December. Though less intense, more rain has fallen since then.

The severe weather also brought strong winds and storm surge, with some flooding reported along coastal areas of the state.

Local media report that one person died in a car swept away by flood water in Limbang on 20 December, 2017.

Sabah

News agency Bernama reported that floods in the neighbouring state of Sabah swept away at least 10 houses in Penampang after the Penampang river overflowed from 17 to 18 December.

Several villages in Kota Belud district were also flooded, forcing around 80 people to evacuate.
