Local media in the Maldives report that severe weather caused flooding in Malé on 11 December 2019.
Some areas recorded more than 80mm of rain in 24 hours. Streets of the capital were inundated, in particularly in the south west of the city, according to Maldives Independent. Personnel from the country’s National Defence Force (MNDF) were deployed to pump out floodwaters in Malé. MNDF also assisted in flood-hit areas of Kulhudhuffushi, which was also affected by flooding at the start of the month. Elsewhere, Maldives police assisted communities in flooded areas on Rasdhoo island.
Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of further severe weather over the coming days.
