Nepal – 12 Dead as Heavy Rain Triggers Floods and Landslides

Floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall since 01 July, 2018, have claimed 12 lives in Nepal, with a further 6 injured and 3 still missing.

According to figures from Nepal’s disaster authority, since 01 July 208 families in 20 districts have been affected by floods and landslides, which have destroyed 14 houses and severely damaged 169.

Three people died after torrential rainfall caused severe damage in Runtigadhi in Rolpa district. Other fatalities were reported in the districts of Parsa, Kailali, Banke, Dang, Sarlahi, Sindhuli (2 fatalities), Tanahu and Kathmandu.

The municipalities of Sarawal and Bardghat in Nawalparasi district were also badly hit, with over 100 homes damaged by flooding and 135 families affected. Sixteen families were affected by flooding in Rajapur, Bardiya district and 10 in Jitpur Simara, Bara district.

The hardest of the rain began to fall on 01 July. Gularia in Bardiya district recorded 173.8 mm in 24 hours to 02 July. Simara in Bara district recorded 76 mm of rain in 24 hours to 03 July.

According to Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, as of 03 July, no rivers were above warning level and all were showing a steady trend except for the Saptakoshi (Kosi) at Chatra and the Mahakali (Sharda) at Darchula (Dattu), which were rising but still below warning levels.
