Turkey – Deadly Flash Floods in Ankara

Flash floods struck in Turkey‘s capital Ankara from 11 June, causing 1 fatality and widespread damages.

Local media, quoting the Metropolitan Municipality of Ankara, said 250 buildings were damaged. Residents of the city made more than 1,500 calls were made to emergency services. Many streets of the city were swamped, forcing some drivers to abandon their vehicles.

Mayor of Ankara, Mansur Yavaş, said the municipality has deployed 840 personnel and 430 vehicles to assist with clean up and repair operations.

Turkey’s Met Agency, Meteoroloji Genel Müdürlüğü (MGM) reported 14.4 mm of rain in Nallıhan, Ankara on 11 June and 31.9 mm in Sincan the next day.

The city was hit by major floods around this time last year, when 3 people reportedly died, and in May 2018 when 6 people were injured.
