Storms and heavy rainfall have been affecting much of Italy over the last few days, resulting in some flooding, particularly in the southern regions. Forecasters say that there could well be further rainfall to come, although things should be clamer (but colder) by Wednesday 4 December.

Original Report:

Puglia

Around 90mm of rainfall in 24 hours in Italy’s southern region of Puglia, resulted in flash floods on 30 November 2013. The affected area was Marina di Ginosa, in the province of Taranto, Puglia, where heavy rainfall caused the Bradano river to overflow. Around 200 families had to be evacuated from their homes yesterday. Schools have been closed in the area. An old, abandoned building in the town has collapsed as a result of the flooding, although no injuries have been reported. The same region was badly affected by floods in October.

Calabria

Meanwhile, Calabria, which was hit by severe flooding in late November, is still suffering from the heavy rainfall, but also from severe winds, roughs seas and storm surges along coastal regions. Sea levels have risen to such an extent that 10 homes had to be evacuated. The towns of Corigliano and Cariati have been badly affected and schools remain closed until Tuesday 3 December. There have also been reports of some landslides in Crotone , Botricello and Sellia Marina.
