Heavy Rainfall and Flooding in Bolivia Continues into 2014

Heavy rainfall in Bolivia over Christmas 2013 caused 29 deaths and affected 3 000 families across the country. The worst affected department was Cochabamba, where authorities reported that rains and hailstorms affected 1 450 families in 14 municipalities.

Continuing heavy rainfall and flooding into the new year affected eight out of the nine Departments in the country by early January 2014, with the worst hit being Cochabamba, Beni, La Paz, Chuquisaca and Potosí.

In the the Amazonian department Beni, 8 213 families in 36 municipalities have been affected since November 2013, including 900 families by the Rio Sécure bursting its banks.

According to NOAA, heavy rainfall could still affect the western parts of Bolivia in the week until 16 January 2014.

Hundreds of hectares of crops were lost in the departments of Chuquicsaca, Cochabamba and La Paz
