Around 70 Killed in Afghanistan Floods

Flash floods around Kabul, as well as eastern Nuristan, Laghman and Khost provinces, have resulted in 70 deaths in central Afghanistan. The worst affected area was (also known as Sarobi or Sarubi) district in Kabul province. Whole villages have been washed away.

The floods were a result of a thunderstorm and heavy rainfall. Such rainfall in the mountainous areas resulted in flood waters – especially in rivers such as the Kabul River – raging towards villages and settlements downstream. One report claims the in the aftermath of the flood, the streets of Surobi are covered in a thick layer of mud and large stones brought by the flood waters. According to the report:

Flash floods are relatively common in Afghanistan’s mountainous areas. Thunderstorms often dump large amounts of water, which then cascades into the valleys turning dry river beds into raging torrents and inundating entire villages in a matter of minutes.
