Flash Floods in Izmir, Turkey

Heavy rainfall and strong winds which began around early on Monday 25 November, triggered flash floods in the province of Izmir, in the Aegean region of Turkey. The rain first began at around 04:00, and became particularly heavy at around 07:00.

The city of Izmir was brought to a standstill as streets were submerged, blocking traffic. There was also widespread disruption to public transport, including trains. The worst affected are was İzmir’s Seferihisar district. The emergency services were called out, but parts of the local fire department struggled to operate after a building of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department was flooded.

Storms have affected other parts of the region over the last few days. A storm in Rhodes, Greece, killed 3 people over the weekend. Another storm on Sunday badly affected transport in Istanbul, Turkey.

Forecasters say that further heavy rainfall is expected in the Aegean region of Turkey over the next few days, at least until Thursday 28 November. The worst affected regions are predicted to be Antalya, Muğla, İzmir, Manisa, Balıkesir, Bursa, Çanakkale, Tekirdağ and Edirne.
