Over 50,000 people have been affected by recent floods in East Java Province, Indonesia after heavy rainfall on 30 June.
A period of heavy rain forced several rivers to overflow in the area, including the Kedunglarangan, Welang, Gembong, Rejoso, and Wrati.
As many a 8 districts in Pasuruan Regency (Bangil, Beji, Kraton, Pohjentrek, Grati, Rejoso, Winongan, Gempol) have reported flooding. Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana – BNPB) say that around 14,000 homes have been flooded or were at risk of flooding. Emergency management officials and volunteers have distributed relief supplies, meals and drinking water to 44 villages affected. Two injuries have been reported but no fatalities.
At one point the floods inundated the major road between Surabaya and Probolinggom with water standing as high as 1 meter. Transportation was interrupted for 14 hours but the road has since been reopened.

BMKG, Indonesia’s Agency for Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics (Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika) report the following figures for 24 hour to 30 June 2016:
- Sengon Pager – 111 mm
- Bangil – 108 mm
- Telebuk – 95 mm
- Said – 80 mm
- Tretes – 71 mm
- Lumbang – 88 mm
- Grati – 86 mm
BNPB say that, with such high intensity of rainfall, rivers and drainage channels were unable to drain surface runoff.
Central Java and Sulawesi Losses Confirmed
The country was hit by severe flooding and landslides just a few days earlier in Central Java and later the Sangihe Islands Regency of North Sulawesi.
BNPD yesterday confirmed that the two disaster caused damages of at least IDR 302,37 billion (Indonesian Rupiah).
As many as 64 were killed in the two disasters, with 3 still missing, 26 injured, and 2.687 displaced, and 3.192 houses damaged.
