Floods hit villages in North Konawe regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, on Saturday 16 July 2016.
The country’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that at least 1,354 people have been displaced and 735 homes damaged. Flooding has affected villages in the sub-districts of Andowia, Asera and Lasolo.
Heavy rain has been falling in the area since Thursday 11 July. According to BNPD, several river, including the Lasolo and its tributary the Lalindu, overflowed. Flood water was up to 1.5 metres deep in some places.
Teams from North Konawe BPBD, Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI) and the police worked to evacuate residents. BPBD has set up two shelters and is distributing food and medical supplies. No fatalities has been recorded so far from the disaster.
Maluku
Flooding has also been reported in Ambon, Maluku. Hundreds of houses were inundated early on Saturday 16 July 2016 in Sirimau and Laitimu Selatan Sub-districts, Kota Ambon. Heavy rain also caused a landslide which left 3 houses severely damaged, according to BNPB. Local disaster management agency is still carrying out damage assessments and full details of displacements and any fatalities are yet to be received.
