President Issues Federal Disaster Declaration for September Floods in Iowa

President Obama has declared a federal disaster as a result of the storms and floods in Iowa from 21 September to 03 October 2016.

The declaration applies to 19 counties of the state: Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Des Moines, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Howard, Linn, Mitchell, Winneshiek, and Wright.

The President’s action makes federal funding available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by severe storms and flooding.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

This is the second federal disaster declaration in a month for Iowa. In early October the President declared a federal disaster for the storms and floods that struck 8 counties (Allamakee, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Floyd, Howard, Mitchell, and Winneshiek) during late August 2016.
