Further Flooding in Mali

Flash floods have struck again in Mali. A few days ago FloodList reported that an estimated 4,000 people have been affected by floods in the Kidal region of Mali.

This time flash floods have struck in the country’s capital, Bamako. The city has a population of around 2 million and lies on the Niger River.

Torrential rainfall on Wednesday 28th August resulted in horrific flooding that killed 24 people. Homes were washed away in several districts of the city, including Bankoni, Taliko, Lafiabougou, Djicoroni Woyowayanko, Lafiabougou Bougouba and Bougoudani. The worst affected district is Taliko where 19 of the 24 victims lost their lives. According to eye witnesses, some of the worst damage was to houses that had been built next to the river on flood plains – land reserved for the overflowing river.
