Heavy rainfall in eastern Uganda from around 22 May caused the River Manafura to break its banks, flooding parts of Butaleja District, Eastern Region.
Local media report that around 150 homes have been flooded, forcing people to evacuate to nearby schools or churches, mostly in in Himutu (Kimutu) and Mazimasa sub-counties. Some homes have been severely damaged and left uninhabitable. Many residents have lost essential items in the flooding, including bedding and food. Crops have been destroyed, livestock lost and roads blocked. Media reports that drinking water has been contaminated by flood water.
Officials leaders have put the number of those affected and in urgent need of relief to at least 2,000 and have called on the government and NGOs for support.
Rainfall records are limited for the region. However the town of Tororo, which is situated about 35 km south east of Mazimasa recorded 54.0 mm of rain in 24 hours to 22 May.
The last few weeks have seen periods of particularly heavy in the region. Local reports said that some roads in Butaleja District have been cut for 2 weeks.
