Heavy rainfall affected areas of Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee on 26 September, causing major flash floods. At least 1 person has died and dozens were evacuated or rescued from homes and vehicles.
One person drowned in flood water in Soddy-Daisy, Hamilton County, Tennessee, according to local news reports. Also in Hamilton County, the Sheriff’s Office said that officers rescued a young boy who was trapped in flood water near Hixson.
Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management said that roads were closed in at least 9 locations. All schools in the county were closed on 27 September.
NWS Morristown said that in 72 hour period to 27 September, Middle Valley in Hamilton County recorded 9.19 inches / 233.43 mm. Shady Grove in Hickman County recorded 10.21 inches / 259.33 mm of rain during the same period.
In Alabama, NWS Birmingham said flooding affected parts of Brighton, Hueytown and Bessemer. A mobile home park was evacuated in Brighton because of rising water, and at least two people were rescued from vehicles after Valley Creek overflowed.
NWS Birmingham said that over 4.1 inches / 101.6 mm of rain fell in the area.
In Mississippi, severe flooding affected parts of Rankin County. Governor Phil Bryant said that “approximately 100 homes, 25 businesses and 50 vehicles have endured some degree of damage. Four bridges have been closed. All residents have been safely evacuated.”
The Governor added: “MEMA (Mississippi Emergency Management Agency) officials are on-site and will assist with damage assessment. Remember, if water is standing in the road, do not attempt to drive through it. Turn around, don’t drown.”
