Storm Sonia: Floods in Sinaloa, Mexico

The concern in Mexico over the potential of Tropical Storm Sonia dissipated on Tuesday 5th November, along with the storm itself. However, the fall-out from the storm could bring further flooding to central Texas this week.

Although there had been little in the way of storm damage, there were some areas around Mexico’s Pacific coast that were affected by flooding. On Monday 4th November, the city of Culiacan, in Sinaloa, saw flood water as high as 50cm in some areas. Around 1000 people had to evacuate their homes, although this was more of a preventative measure. There were no reports of death or injury.

Possible Further Floods in Texas
Tropical Storm Sonia has now been downgraded to a tropical depression. This could, however, spell more disaster for Texas. Parts of central Texas are still reeling from the flash floods that struck last week, particularly around the Austin area. Forecasters believe that the tropical depression could bring further heavy rainfall top Texas within the next few days.

According to Accuweather

Tuesday is when the moisture from Sonia will combine with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and a storm system emerging from the Rockies to produce widespread rain from central Texas to eastern Nebraska and Iowa.

USA East Coast
The rainfall could even reach the East Coast area, possibly by Thursday or Friday this week, although at the moment forecasters don’t believe the weather system poses any threat of flooding beyond areas in central Texas and western Iowa.
