An announcement made yesterday, Wednesday 18 June 2014, claims that the damage caused by recent Bosnia floods will cost the country $2.7 billion.
The announcement was made by Ricardo Zapata Mart who is currently leading a team made up of officials from the Bosnian government, the European Union, United Nations and World Bank to assess the damage from the flood disaster.
The assessment team also said that the floods will mean that the growth of Bosnia’s GPD will fall from 2.2% to 1.1% this year. Bosnia’s gross domestic product stood at $17.05 billion USD in 2012. The $2.7 billion damages represents a huge portion of the GDP and will leave Bosnia requiring further international aid in recovering from the floods.
Over 35 people were killed in the flood disaster across 3 Balkan countries of Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia during May 2014. The flooding caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure (see our photo collection here) In Bosnia the flooding unearthed old landmines from the war in the 1990s.
