Floods in Central and Eastern Australia – Over 200 mm of Rain in 24 Hours

A tropical low has swept across central and eastern parts of Australia over the last few days, dumping huge amounts of rain. AccuWeather say that the tropical low has since dissipated, but tropical moisture remains across the eastern areas, bringing with it more heavy rainfall.

South Australia and Northern Territory

From Friday 09 January 2015, parts of the far north of the state of South Australia saw flooding in areas that hadn’t seen rain in some time.

ABC News in Australia reports that the flood hit areas will see several roads and tracks closed for weeks.

The Birdsville, Oodnadatta and Strzelecki tracks are among roads that have now been closed since parts of the Flinders Ranges and outback recorded rainfall of between 100 and 200 millimetres since Friday.

The townships of Marree, William Creek and Oodnadatta have been cut off as a result of the floods.

Just across the state border in Northern Territoriy, a man drowned in the flooded Todd River in Alice Springs.

Health authorities are warning of the increased threat of mosquito-borne viruses as the flood water starts to recede.

Victoria

The regional Victorian city of Bendigo suffered some of the heaviest rainfall on Friday 09 January. Flooding was reported across the city.

Queensland
