Kenya Red Cross reported yesterday, 29 April 2015, that at least 9 people have been killed and 8 injured in the flash floods that struck the town on Narok, south-west Kenya, after heavy rain on Tuesday 28 April 2015. Local media are reporting that the death toll has now climbed to 15, with many people still missing.
The flash floods struck with such force that buildings collapsed and at least 10 cars were swept away. Damage assessments are ongoing and exact figures are unlikely to be available for some time. Rescue operations involving teams from the police and Red Cross have been hampered by further heavy rainfall. Kenya Red Cross have set up an information centre at Narok Police Station to record the missing persons.
The period from March to May is Kenya’s rainy season, referred to as the “long rains.” Kenya’s meteorological department has warned that rain will continue in May, and has urged people to remain alert to threats of flooding.
