Afghan and international news agencies are reporting yet another flash flood to strike in in the north of the country.
The flash flood hit the Guzirga i-Nur (Gozar Gahe Noor) district of Baghlan province, Afghanistan on Friday 06 June 2014 after yet more torrential rain fell in the region. Homes have been damaged, forcing thousands to evacuate to higher ground.
The death toll is expected to be extremely high. Rescue teams have been sent to the region. As of today, Saturday 07 June, the authorities say that at least 54 bodies have been recovered. Local police say that the likely death toll will rise to over 100.
Although exact figures are hard to come by, this latest flood disaster in northern Afghanistan brings the total killed in floods since late April to around 217. 40 people died after floods hit Jawzjan Province in late April. The flooding spread and the death toll rose to at least 123 a few days later, with more provinces affected.
Recently the UN reported that as many as 140,000 people have been affected by flooding in Afghanistan since late April.
