Floods Leave 1 Dead and Thousands Stranded in Southern California

Thunderstorms across parts of Southern California on Sunday 03 August 2014 led to flash floods in San Bernardino County that stranded around 2,500 residents and left 1 person dead.

Residents of the small towns of Oak Glen and Forest Falls were cut off after floods, debris and landslides had blocked roads. Some reports claim the debris is 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 metres) deep.

The floods also swept a car off a road in Mount Baldy in the San Bernardino mountains. One person in the car died. Several houses have been reported as damaged and emergency services had to make several rescues as people became trapped in their homes.

The storm was brief but fierce, lasting just over 1 hour. According to the National Weather Service, dumped around 3.5 inches (90 mm) of rain.
