The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) declared a state of emergency in the Gaza Strip yesterday, following days of heavy rainfall.
The rain has caused localized flooding and worsened the already poor living conditions. Hundreds have been evacuated from the area around Sheikh Radwan storm water lagoon, located about 3 km north of Gaza City. Schools have been closed as result of flooding, affecting around 65,000 students.
In a statement made yesterday, UNWRA said it is attempting to provide emergency aid supplies, including fuel for pumping stations, portable pumps, water, sanitation and health facilities. “We are particularly concerned for those families still seeking adequate shelter and preparing for the winter months, and for the impact the flooding is already having on children unable to attend school.”

Gaza suffered similar severe flooding almost exactly 1 year ago, during December 2013 when around 5,000 people had to evacuate their homes after days of torrential rain.
