Côte d’Ivoire – Deadly Floods in Abidjan and Aboisso Departments

At least 2 people have died and 1 is still missing after heavy rain and flash flooding in Abidjan Aboisso Departments in Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

In Abidjan, 1 person died after flooding caused a building collapsed in Yopougon district of the city. One person is still missing after a vehicle was swept away by flood waters.

Some areas of the city recorded more than 120mm of rain on 05 October, 2019. Roads were severely damaged, causing major traffic disruption.

Flooding was also reported in the cities of Aboisso and Ayamé in Aboisso Department, to the east of Abijan, during the same period. News agency Agence Ivoirienne de Presse (AIP) reported that one person died in Ayamé.

Also in Aboisso Department, 14 houses were destroyed in the village of Sanhouman after heavy rain that began on 04 October, 2019, according to AIP. The nearby Eholiè river broke its banks, flooding the village, destroying homes and causing material damage. A total of 34 households were affected.

2018 Floods in Abidjan and Aboisso Departments

Eighteen people died in flooding in the Abidjan in June 2018. Severe flooding hit parts of Aboisso Department the following month.
