300 Families Displaced as Floods Continue in Kisumu and Homa Bay, Kenya

Further flooding has forced 300 families from their homes in Kisumu and Homa Bay counties in Kenya.

According to local media, the rivers Maugo, Awach Tende, Rangwe and Riana have all overflowed. The worst affected areas are Kabogo village in Nyando constituency, Kisumu, and East Kagan, West and East Kochi, Homa Bay. Crops and livestock, as well as hundreds of homes, have been damaged.

The area has seen some heavy rain over the last few days. Some locals claim poor drainage and irrigation is the cause of regular flooding in the area.

Kisumu was hit by flooding earlier this month, when around 1,500 people were forced from their homes after flood water started to rise in Muhoroni, Kisumu county, 06 April 2015.

Flooding in Homa Bay on 10 April left seven people dead after they were swept away by flood water attempting to cross swollen rivers near Gongo and Kotieno.
