A short period of torrential rain during the evening of 14 March, 2018, caused severe flash floods in Mbarara District, western Uganda.
At least 1 person had died in the floods and more could be missing. Police say they have recovered the body of one motorcycle rider who was swept away by flood waters. Police are still searching the area for further victims after more motorcycles were found in the floods.
Some buildings were also damaged, including parts of a hotel complex still under construction, according to local media.
Mbarara recorded 122 mm of rain in 24 hours to early 15 March. Most of the heavy rain fell in a short period from 19:00 on 14 March. It is likely that the heavy rain caused the Rwizi River which runs through the city of Mbarara to burst its banks.
