Brazil – Deadly Floods and Landslides in Rio De Janeiro After 90mm of Rain in 1 Hour

Strong winds, torrential rain, flash flooding and landslides caused havoc in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 06 and 07 February, 2019.

Officials said that some areas recorded more than the February average rainfall in just a few hours. Wind gusts of around 110 km/h were also recorded.

The Municipality of Rio de Janeiro activated its “crisis stage” late on 06 February and sounded heavy rain warning sirens in several areas of the city.

Thirty-five incidents of flooding were reported around the city and the strong winds downed 170 trees. During the storm Rio’s Civil Defence were called to 206 interventions as a result of flooding, wind damage and landslides, mostly in the neighbourhoods of Barra da Tijuca, Barra de Guaratiba, São Conrado, Itanhangá, Vidigal and Rocinha.

Rio Mayor Marcelo Crivella confirmed that 6 people died as a result of the severe weather conditions, including 2 passengers of a bus that was hit by a landslide and a falling tree.

One person died in a mudslide in Rocinha. Other victims died in collapsing buildings in Vidigal and Barra de Guaratiba. Mayor Marcelo Crivella has announced a three-day official mourning period in the city.

Four people died in Rio after a storm dumped 123mm of rain in 1 hour in Barra da Tijuca almost exactly 1 year ago, between 14 and 15 February last year.

Rainfall

Some areas of the city saw almost twice the amount of rainfall normally seen for the whole of an average February.

In 6 hours from 18:00 on 06 February, Vidigal recorded 161.2 mm of rain and Rocinha 164 mm.

During the peak of the storm, 6 locations recorded more than 70mm of rain in 1 hour.
