Colombia – 17 Killed in Landslide in Cauca Department

At least 17 people have died after heavy rainfall in Colombia triggered a landslide near the town of Rosas in the southwestern department of Cauca on Sunday, 21 April, 2019.

Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD – Unidad Nacional para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres) said that the landslide buried at least eight homes and blocked a stretch of the Pan-American Highway connecting the departments of Cauca and Nariño. Around 56 families in the area have been affected and left requiring assistance from relief agencies.

At least 17 bodies have been found so far. Five others have been injured and transferred to nearby hospitals. UNGRD said rescue workers, including a team of 350 UNGRD personnel, were continuing their search for victims, removing earth and debris with heavy machinery.

Colombian President Iván Duque visited the area on Sunday. He said via Social Media:

“We arrived in Rosas, Cauca, to bring solutions and support to the community. We accompany them in this difficult moment, they have the support of the whole country. We are taking the necessary actions to care for the victims. We ask God for the deceased and their families.”

“We take integral measures for gliding care in Rosas, Cauca; These include the characterization of victims, identification of bodies, humanitarian aid such as food, supplies, blankets, rent aid and housing solutions for 56 families.”
