Disaster authorities in Peru report that around 200 homes have been damaged after heavy rain and flooding in Arequipa Department.
Parts of Arequipa were hit by floods during January. Heavy rainfall from 17 February triggered more flooding in the department, affecting the provinces of Caylloma, La Union and Arequipa, according to Peru’s Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia Nacional (COEN)
A thunderstorm caused damage and flash flooding in the city of Arequipa, capital of the department on 20 February. Around 30 vehicles were damaged after an underground car park flooded.
Meanwhile in Chiguata District of Arequipa Province, around 120 homes were damaged on 20 February, after intense rainfall and thunderstorms. COEN said that over 100 families were affected.
In Caylloma Province, flash flooding damaged 10 homes in Tuti District on 19 February. Roads and crops were also damaged. Flood damage in Maca district has left resident without drinking water.
Flooding struck parts of Tauria District in La Unión Province on 18 February, damaging schools and at least 50 homes.
The recent floods brings the total number of homes damaged in the department to 529 since the start of the year, according to COEN.
