Louisiana Floods – Floating Caskets and Stray Alligators

The seemingly endless rounds of storms that struck Louisiana and parts of Texas from 28 May 2014 brought widespread flooding, some of it with unusual consequences.

The heavy rain began to fall on Wednesday 28 May 2014. One of the worst hit areas was the St. Landry Parish in Louisiana, where 50 homes were damaged after as much as 7 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours.

In Ascension Parish, just south of Baton Rouge, a man was found drowned in a flooded parking lot after being dragged under his vehicle by flood water. Flooding also damage around 30 homes in the area.

Roads and homes were also reportedly flooded in Breaux Bridge (St. Martin Parish ), and areas of Lafayette in particular Carencro.

Rainfall

Almost 7 inches of rain fell between Wednesday 28 May and Thursday 29 May in Lafayette, Louisiana. This is the highest recorded rainfall since November 1995 and as much as the combined total rainfall for March, April and May this year.

In Lutcher (St. James Parish ), Louisiana, 10.77 inches of rain fell in 24 hours Wednesday 28 May and Thursday 29 May 2014. By 5pm Wednesday 28 May, Lake Charles, Louisiana had seen 4.68 inches of rain fall.

Alligators and Caskets

Floods can often throw up a few unusual consequences. The recent floods in the Balkans uncovered bodies of war victims and unexploded land mines. Some time ago flooding in the streets of Chicago’s suburbs brought out the adventurous spirit in one local jet ski owner. Some photos from the floods and storms that hit UK late 2013 and early 2014 showed seals swimming in flooded parking lots along the Norofolk coast.

The recent flood waters in Louisiana also brought about some unusual consequences.

Stray Alligator

Floating Caskets

In Belle Rose, Assumption Parish, Louisiana, around 10 caskets were lifted by flood waters from their graves in on of the local cemeteries there.
