4 Killed in Flash Floods in Northern Oman

Flash floods struck in northern Oman on Friday 04 September, 2015. At least 4 people were killed, and one person remains missing.

The four victims were all travelling in the same car when it was swept away by flood waters in a wadi or dry river bed in Rustaq, Al Batinah Region. Several others were missing after similar incidents of cars in flood waters. All but one of the missing have since been found. The one remaining missing person was swept away by flash floods in Muttrah on Friday. Some street flooding was also reported in the capital, Muscat, over the last 2 days.

The floods were triggered by a short burst of heavy rain and caused damage to buildings, roads and vehicles.  According to Oman meteorological department figures, 59.8 mm of rain fell in Amerat and 17.4 mm in Rustaq. The typical average for Rustaq in September is 3 mm according to Oman Meteorolgy PACA.

More rain fell yesterday in north-eastern Oman. The town of Saiq in Ad Dakhiliyah recorded 23 mm of rain in 24 hours.

Oman Meteorolgy PACA said today that there were chances of “thundershowers associated with hail and fresh down draft winds over Al-Hajar mountains (north-eastern Oman) and adjoining areas may extend to the coastal areas of Oman Sea towards afternoon”.
